The hope of Valle Escondido, whether guests come to the farm, hotel, café, night walk or preserve is that they leave with a positive experience that could potentially influence a stronger connection to nature and sustainable practices. Valle Escondido believes that fundamentally people enjoy nature, supporting that connection is part of our mission. We believe that people, if given the opportunity, will work towards sustainable practices and preservation of natural environments.

Mulch and Leaf Cutters

July 1, 2017

Recently our resident leaf cutter ant colony sliced their way through the kale planted by the the tilapia pond garden!! So we started again, placing vetiver mulch over the beds. Already our onions are shooting up to the sky. We also planted some insect repelling plants that hopefully will persuade the ants to look else where next time.

Leaf cutters decimating salad greens are a common phenomena around these parts! We are hoping they'll find some trees and forget about our huglekulter beds for a while... if not we'll need to experiment with some other techniques, maybe using trenches, cayenne water spray or Reina de Noche powder to deter them! We will let you know how this plays out.
